Plovdiv is one of the most beautiful cities in the Balkans, it has an ancient history of almost 3,000 years. It is one of the major Bulgarian cities and is located in the south of the country, on the banks of the Maritsa River, about 150 km south-east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
One of the main historical symbols of Plovdiv is Ancient Amphitheatre. Theatre can accommodate 5,000 to 7,000 spectators, and is still used today, where in our time are held festivals and holidays.
Especially interesting is to walk through the “Old Plovdiv”. A few quarters make up the whole architectural complex “Old Plovdiv”, which is an “open-air museum”. Here you can feel the atmosphere of the city of the period of the Bulgarian Renaissance. In a small area there are well-preserved houses, some of which have been turned into museums.
Another period in the history of Bulgaria can be recalled, looking at the magnificent Dzhumaya Mosque. Dzhumaya Mosque is one of the oldest Ottoman cult buildings on the Balkans. It is also among the largest – an impressive rectangular building whose salon is 33 to 27 meters in size. It is located in the centre, next to the ancient stadium. The temple impresses all tourists with its scale, which for the Middle Ages seems to be incredible. Nine domes, which are completely covered with lead, crowned walls of double brick and ashlar.
It is also interesting to visit the monument to Soviet soldier, who are called “Alyosha” here, 11,5 meter soldier located on the Bunardzhik hill is a sculpture of a Soviet soldier in full height, whose gaze is turned to the East. You can climb to it freely, although this is not too easy, especially in the summer heat. But from above you will be rewarded with a panorama of streets, parks and squares spread out on a hill.
