About Plovdiv, Bachkovo monastery and Asen's Fortress:

Plovdiv

Plovdiv is one of the most beautiful cities in the Balkans. It has an ancient history of almost 3,000 years. Plovdiv is one of the major Bulgarian cities and it is located in the south of the country, on the banks of the Maritsa River, about 150 km south-east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Plovdiv is a city in which you want to return again and again. No wonder he was chosen the cultural capital of Europe in 2019. With its seven hills and its 3000 years of history, Plovdiv is related with Rome and Athens, but possesses its own charm. City keeps signs of different eras that it experienced: Thracian fortress, Roman amphitheater, mosque from Ottoman times, architectural complex “Old Plovdiv”, Soviet monument to a soldier, medieval narrow streets, as well as modern art museums and exhibitions. 

Bachkovo monastery

Bachkovo monastery is the second largest after Rila monastery. Located in the Rhodope Mountains on the banks of the river Chaya, at 189 km from Sofia and 30 km from Plovdiv. In the monastery you can trace the influence of three cultures: Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian. The greatest sacredness of the Bachkovo Monastery is its icon of Virgin Mary. It is kept in a special place in the congregational monastery temple. Because of its miraculousness it is subject to worship by a constant flow of believers. The monastery has its own museum, where you can see a liturgical supplies and samples of the church art of different times. The monastery complex and the surrounding area have become a developed tourist site with many shops, stalls and restaurants surrounding the pedestrian zone the monastery. 

Everything that grows or is produced in the Rhodopes is put up for sale – rare herbs, home-made sweet fruits, goat and buffalo yoghurt and cheese, Rhodope woolen blankets.

Asen’s Fortress

Asen’s Fortress is a medieval fortress located 2 km south of the city of Asenovgrad. The historic fortress stands proudly on a lonely rock, on the threshold of the Rhodope Mountains. The rock on which the fortress is built rises 130 meters above the city level, and 100 meters above the river level. Fortress was built in the ninth century by the Byzantines, existed until 1410, and located an area of 1,2 hectares. Until today the best preserved the church “Blessed Virgin of Petrich”, as well as the outer fortress wall up to 3 m high and up to 2 m thick. From the Asen’s Fortress opens  beautiful view of the Rhodope Mountains and the town of Asenovgrad.
