Balchik is a coastal town on the Black Sea coast and a seaside resort in northeastern Bulgaria. It is located in the Dobrich region, 35 km southeast of Dobrich and 42 km northeast of Varna. The city is picturesquely spread along the hilly terraces descending from the Dobruja plateau to the sea. It is often referred to as the “White City” due to the white color of the hills. Interesting sights of Balchik are the architectural and park complex “Balchik Palace”, consisting of a complex of villas built in the period 1924 – 1934 as the summer residence of the Romanian Queen Mary of Edinburgh. Queen Mary named the summer residence The Lonely Nest. It is now known as the “Quiet Nest Palace”.
Cape Kaliakra is high, windy and rocky, cut into the sea for 2 km off the coast of Kavarna. One of the most picturesque places on the Northern coast of the Black Sea. There is something to see on the cape – unearthly views of the sea, reddish rocks, fortress walls, ancient churches, necropolises and monuments of later times. There is a museum, a restaurant and a chapel on the edge of the cliff. Cape Kaliakra is located an hour’s drive from Varna, or rather about 60 kilometers northeast of our sea capital. The road to Kaliakra passes through the village of Bolgarevo, the capital of Bulgarian melons.
