About Sozopol

Sozopol is a famous resort in the southern part of the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. It is the administrative center of the Sozopol community, which is part of the Burgas region. The distance from Sozopol to Burgas is 34 km, to Nessebar – 67 km, to Sunny Beach – 69 km, to Varna – 150 km. Sozopol is divided into two parts: the Old (the historical part, declared an architectural reserve) and the New Town, where the bulk of the hotels are concentrated. These two parts are separated by a park and a beach.

Sozopol is the oldest Bulgarian city on the Black Sea coast. The first settlement in these places arose as early as 4-3 millennium BC. e. In 610 BC e. at this place, the immigrants from Miletus founded the Greek colony of Apollonius, named after the god Apollo and erected a 14-meter statue of Apollo. In 72 BC. e. Roman commander Marc Terence Varron Lucullus captured and destroyed Apollonia, and brought the aforementioned statue to Rome.

About Varna

Varna is located in north-eastern Bulgaria, on the Black Sea coast. Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with a population of about 330,000 people. Because of its historical and economic and cultural importance, it is often called the “Sea Capital of Bulgaria”.  With its modern port, railway junction and international airport connecting with 35 countries and over 100 cities in the world, Varna is one of the largest transport centres in Bulgaria.

History of Varna goes back centuries. In the 7th century BC, Odessos fortress, built by Greek colonists from the city of Miletus, already stood on this site. In the year 15 AD, it became part of the Roman Empire. The city was named after the Bulgarian name “Varna” in the 9th century, although it finally became part of the Bulgarian kingdom only in the 13th century. In the era of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Varna turned into a busy shopping centre, which traded with Genoa, Venice, Dubrovnik. The tourist boom of the twentieth century turned Varna into one of the favourite vacation spots of Bulgarian and foreign tourists.
